SUPPORTING LEARNING AT HOME
A routine works best when the starting point is small and predictable. Begin with a short task that the child understands, followed by a brief review and a clear stopping point. Choose the timing around sleep, meals, school demands and the child's available energy. There is no single ideal session length for every child. If a plan repeatedly fails, adjust the size or timing before labelling the child unmotivated.
A practical starting point
- Choose one achievable task
- Prepare the required books
- Agree when to pause
- Review one thing learned
What to notice
Notice whether the child can begin with less prompting. Change one part of the routine at a time.
Review after trying the approach
Ask what became easier, where support is still needed and what to try next. Keep a small sample and compare it with the earlier attempt. Adjust the plan in response to the learner rather than repeating an unhelpful routine.
