Short, supported reading can reveal the next step.
Use the following routine as a starting point. Adjust the difficulty to the learner’s current level and school requirements.
- Choose a short text that is not overwhelming.
- Model one sentence with natural pauses.
- Let the child try, allowing time to sound out unfamiliar words.
- Ask one meaning question and revisit difficult words later.
Try this
After reading a short story, ask “Why did the character do that?”
Explanation
Accept a simple answer first, then ask which words or events support it. This develops understanding alongside accurate word reading.
Make practice purposeful
Keep the task short enough to finish thoughtfully. Ask the learner to explain a choice, identify one improvement and try again. Progress is easier to notice when the task and the feedback are specific.
