SUPPORTING LEARNING AT HOME
Start by asking the child to explain the instruction in their own words. A wrong answer can come from misunderstanding the task, missing knowledge or a calculation error; these need different responses. Model one similar example if necessary, then return the original task to the learner. Completing the work for the child can hide the very information the teacher needs about their understanding.
A practical starting point
- Ask what the task means
- Identify the first step together
- Let the child attempt independently
- Mark the point where help was needed
What to notice
Share the difficulty with the teacher using a specific example rather than a general label such as careless.
Review after trying the approach
Ask what became easier, where support is still needed and what to try next. Keep a small sample and compare it with the earlier attempt. Adjust the plan in response to the learner rather than repeating an unhelpful routine.
What could you ask TRICEF?
Contact the team with the current class, board, teaching language and a specific learning question. The team can explain current programmes and the support that may be suitable.
