Perimeter before memorising formulas

UNDERSTAND · PRACTISE · REVIEW

Trace the boundary of a rectangle and label each side. Perimeter measures the distance around the shape, so use a length unit. Do not confuse it with the area inside.

A worked example

For sides 8 cm and 5 cm, add 8 + 5 + 8 + 5 = 26 cm. Grouping the equal sides gives 2 × (8 + 5).

Try this learning routine

  1. Read the explanation and say the idea in your own words.
  2. Cover the worked answer and attempt a similar question.
  3. Check each step, including units or word meaning.
  4. Record one mistake and retry a new example later.

Independent practice

Choose one answer for each question and write a reason. These are foundation activities, not a complete board examination.

  1. A rectangle is 21 cm long and 3 cm wide. Its perimeter in cm is:

    • 48
    • 50
    • 24
    • 63
  2. A rectangle is 22 cm long and 4 cm wide. Its perimeter in cm is:

    • 52
    • 26
    • 88
    • 54
  3. A rectangle is 23 cm long and 5 cm wide. Its perimeter in cm is:

    • 115
    • 58
    • 28
    • 56
  4. A rectangle is 24 cm long and 6 cm wide. Its perimeter in cm is:

    • 30
    • 62
    • 60
    • 144
  5. A rectangle is 25 cm long and 7 cm wide. Its perimeter in cm is:

    • 64
    • 66
    • 175
    • 32
  6. A rectangle is 26 cm long and 8 cm wide. Its perimeter in cm is:

    • 70
    • 208
    • 34
    • 68
Answers and explanations
  1. 48 — Perimeter = 2(length + width) = 2(21 + 3) = 48 cm.
  2. 52 — Perimeter = 2(length + width) = 2(22 + 4) = 52 cm.
  3. 56 — Perimeter = 2(length + width) = 2(23 + 5) = 56 cm.
  4. 60 — Perimeter = 2(length + width) = 2(24 + 6) = 60 cm.
  5. 64 — Perimeter = 2(length + width) = 2(25 + 7) = 64 cm.
  6. 68 — Perimeter = 2(length + width) = 2(26 + 8) = 68 cm.

Your next step

Use the same idea in a fresh example. Bring the method and your questions to a discussion with TRICEF, rather than relying on a score alone.

Can these resources be used at home?

Yes. Read the explanation, attempt independently, then check the answer. A parent or guardian should assist younger learners.

Does one score describe the learner’s whole ability?

No. A short practice check samples limited skills. Discuss the explanations and actual work when choosing the next learning step.
