Moles connect mass and particles

UNDERSTAND · PRACTISE · REVIEW

Use the molar mass stated in the question. Divide sample mass by molar mass to find amount in moles. Keep grams and grams per mole visible so the unit cancellation makes sense.

A worked example

For 36 g of water using 18 g/mol, n = 36 ÷ 18 = 2 mol. This is an amount of substance, not a mass of 2 g.

Try this learning routine

  1. Read the explanation and say the idea in your own words.
  2. Cover the worked answer and attempt a similar question.
  3. Check each step, including units or word meaning.
  4. Record one mistake and retry a new example later.

Independent practice

Answers and explanations
  1. 1 — n = m/M = 18/18 = 1 mol.
  2. 2 — n = m/M = 36/18 = 2 mol.
  3. 3 — n = m/M = 54/18 = 3 mol.
  4. 4 — n = m/M = 72/18 = 4 mol.
  5. 5 — n = m/M = 90/18 = 5 mol.
  6. 6 — n = m/M = 108/18 = 6 mol.

Can these resources be used at home?

Yes. Read the explanation, attempt independently, then check the answer. A parent or guardian should assist younger learners.

Does one score describe the learner’s whole ability?

No. A short practice check samples limited skills. Discuss the explanations and actual work when choosing the next learning step.
