SUPPORTING LEARNING AT HOME
Choose a short text the child can approach without being overwhelmed. Give time to attempt unfamiliar words and use a calm prompt rather than immediately supplying every answer. After a small section, ask a meaning question. Fluent word reading and understanding are connected but different skills. A child who reads the words accurately may still need help explaining the story.
A practical starting point
- Read a short section
- Ask what happened
- Ask which words support the answer
- Revisit one difficult word later
What to notice
Keep the exchange supportive. The aim is understanding and practice, not catching the child out.
Review after trying the approach
Ask what became easier, where support is still needed and what to try next. Keep a small sample and compare it with the earlier attempt. Adjust the plan in response to the learner rather than repeating an unhelpful routine.
What could you ask TRICEF?
Contact the team with the current class, board, teaching language and a specific learning question. The team can explain current programmes and the support that may be suitable.
