Give feedback that helps the next attempt

SUPPORTING LEARNING AT HOME

Describe an observable action rather than assigning a fixed label to the child. Say what worked, identify one change and provide a chance to try again. Feedback is more useful when the learner understands the suggestion and can apply it soon. Comparing a child constantly with another learner can distract from their own starting point and progress.

A practical starting point

  1. Describe what you observed
  2. Recognise a useful strategy
  3. Choose one improvement
  4. Offer another short attempt

What to notice

Replace “You are bad at maths” with a specific prompt such as “Let us check how the fraction was divided.”

Review after trying the approach

Ask what became easier, where support is still needed and what to try next. Keep a small sample and compare it with the earlier attempt. Adjust the plan in response to the learner rather than repeating an unhelpful routine.

What could you ask TRICEF?

Contact the team with the current class, board, teaching language and a specific learning question. The team can explain current programmes and the support that may be suitable.

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Questions, answered.

Useful details before your next step.

Can these resources be used at home?

Yes. Read the explanation, attempt independently, then check the answer. A parent or guardian should assist younger learners.

Does one score describe the learner’s whole ability?

No. A short practice check samples limited skills. Discuss the explanations and actual work when choosing the next learning step.
