SUPPORTING LEARNING AT HOME
Let the child explain a concept in the language they can currently use most clearly, then connect that understanding to the terms required at school. Translating every word mechanically can obscure meaning. Keep a small glossary with the term, a simple explanation and an example. The language of an assessment should be considered when interpreting its score.
A practical starting point
- Explain the idea orally
- Connect it to school terminology
- Use the term in an example
- Revisit it in a new context
What to notice
Confirm the teaching and material language for a course before enrolling. Website language and teaching language are separate choices.
Review after trying the approach
Ask what became easier, where support is still needed and what to try next. Keep a small sample and compare it with the earlier attempt. Adjust the plan in response to the learner rather than repeating an unhelpful routine.
What could you ask TRICEF?
Contact the team with the current class, board, teaching language and a specific learning question. The team can explain current programmes and the support that may be suitable.
